Dear Families:
Please take a minute to review this information as some of our students are actively engaging an APP called YikYak. From what I have seen the last couple of days and through a bit of research, this app is very inappropriate, destructive and hurtful. As a parent and an educator, I strongly believe this APP’s sole purpose is to provide a means to anonymously and intentionally hurt and harm someone without any accountability. This only serves to be destructive to our school family and to our community. The APP, YIK YAK, which from my research seems to have been banned in most of the United States for some years, has now resurfaced. This app is a social media platform that allows users to anonymously post any messages, then sends notification to anyone with the app and within five miles. The users can see and respond anonymously to the anonymous post. This app can only be obtained through their personal device such as a cell phone / watch app and is not supported on our school provided learning devices.
I am asking every parent/guardian of every student in our school to have conversations with your children about this app and delete it. In my observation and opinion, It is harmful to anyone’s social and emotional wellbeing and to our school environment.
Our cell phone policy allows students the privilege of being in possession of personal devices before/after school, during passing periods, and at their lunch. When in a classroom with their teachers, cell phones are to be put away and students are expected to be engaged in learning. No teacher or staff member wants to engage with a student concerning their personal devices and lose class time addressing a student’s cell phone or device. We only come into possession of a student’s personal device when they refuse to participate in their class appropriately.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Every student and staff have the right to attend school in a safe and appropriate learning environment. It is our hope by communicating about this matter that we can work together in the best interest of all our children and supporting our mission statement of providing a safe and appropriate learning environment promoting productive and responsible citizenship. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jackie Burdette, Principal
