Great things happening at CVHS! In response to our school, home and community surveys, we've added financial literacy as graduation requirement for incoming freshman and this school year it is an opportunity provided to all 9th-12th grade students. Mrs. Gatewood includes real world math application as students learn the concepts of checking accounts, savings, types of credit, budgeting, investments, taxes and more.Just another way to help prepare our students for life after high school.

Mrs. Ross’s creative writing class tried their hand at 5 senses poetry today. It was a first for all of us and FAR from boring. We’ve got some serious jokesters in this class! Any guesses who kept us laughing???

Cedar Vale Elementary has a new 5th grade teacher, Mr. Jacob Hayes. Mr. Hayes went to Johnson County Community College, Cowley County Community, and Newman University. He teaches 4th and 5th Math and 5th Science and Social Studies. He feels math and science are his strongest subjects. The reason he wanted to teach here is because he enjoys the small school environment. He feels in the bigger schools you can’t get much one-on-one time with students very often. He was an ESL para at Arkansas City Middle School for about 5 years. He has been working in a school environment for 5 years and this is his first year actually teaching instead of just helping around the classroom. He prefers to use pencil and paper for math instead of using technology, but feels technology is really useful for science because it’s a lot easier to find videos on the current topic he is teaching. He encourages all students to ask questions if they do not understand what is being taught. Over the summer, Mr. Hayes coached Babe Ruth Baseball at the Rec Center.

Cedar Vale School has the privilege of having Mr. Connor Stone as our new P.E. teacher and coach. He is a 2011 graduate of Dexter High School. He attended Cowley College and Southwestern University. Mr. Stone graduated with a degree in sports management, and then earned his MBA in business. He started out as a para and is working his way up to being a teacher. He likes small schools and he feels that our school is pretty relaxed. Mr. Stone is still learning how to motivate his students. When asked, “What would be something the student would be surprised about you.” He stated that most do not realize just how young he is. Mr. Stone enjoyed his summer by doing a lot of camping and fishing. The thing that inspires him is the challenge of bettering himself.

Ms. Brittany Schmidt is Cedar Vale’s new science teacher. This is Ms. Schmidt's first year teaching. She has made her home here in Cedar Vale in a darling remodeled house. She has a bachelors degree in chemistry and in psychology from Emporia State University. When asked, what do you find interesting about science? she stated, “It changes with new information and keeps me on my toes”. Ms. Schmidt likes small schools like Cedar Vale. She likes getting to know all her students. She feels that everyone is friendly and welcoming. When asked how she will motivate students to complete their work? she stated, “I try to give them plenty of time to complete their work and always offer help”. She feels technology helps us explore new ideas and she is always trying to improve. When ask what is something most people would not know about her? She informed us that she has two pet rats”.

Ms. Kayla Signer is Cedar Vale School’s new 6-7th grade math and science teacher. She also teaches High School Agriculture. She currently lives in Sedan Kansas. Previously she was a long term substitute for Cedar Vale Elementary in the first grade class. She loved our school and wanted to come back. This is her second year teaching; during her first year she taught Agriculture at Elk Valley High School. Ms. Signer plans on furthering students' knowledge of agriculture with hands-on and life changing experiences. She went to Coffeyville Community College and Oklahoma Panhandle State University. She also earned her American Degree in FFA which only about a half of one percent of FFA members get this degree. Something that inspires her is children who want to learn new things and are interested in new things. She motivates her students with positive reinforcement. She thinks Cedar Vale School has a great learning environment.
